With many years of experience and training in this challenging rehab sector, Sharon brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. 

What is Hand Therapy?

Hand Therapy is a profession/discipline that addresses issues and injuries to the hand, wrist and elbow. Hand therapists can be either occupational therapists or physical therapists who have specialized training in treating upper extremity conditions. They work closely with physicians and clients to provide a continuum of care. Treatment can begin within days of injury or surgery and continues until the client has returned to work and/or functional ADLs.

Hand therapists are specialized in treating upper extremity conditions including:

  • Traumatic injuries
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Sports injuries
  • Tennis elbow and other types of tendonitis
  • Carpal, cubital tunnel & other nerve entrapment disorders
  • Repetitive motion syndromes
  • Amputation
  • Burns & frostbite
  • Tendon and nerve injuries
  • Dupuytren’s contractures
  • Chronic regional pain syndrome

Evaluation & Treatment

Following an extensive evaluation, an individualized treatment plan is developed which may include the following components:

  • Wound care
  • Range of motion and strengthening
  • Swelling control/edema management
  • Cold &/or heat modalities
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Other modalities including ultrasound & functional electrical stim
  • Scar and soft tissue management
  • Desensitization and sensory re-education
  • Customized orthotic fabrication
  • Education
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Home exercise program
